Carlough Family

The first member of the Carlough family in Seldovia was JAMES HOWARD CARLOUGH “Josie” , who was born on May 23, 1893, in Paterson, New Jersey to James and Mary Carlough. He arrived in Alaska sometime between 1910 and 1920. He married Aphanasia “Jessie” Moonin on September 26, 1921, in Seldovia, Alaska. They had seven children in 16 years. He was a pile driver and died, at the age of 41, on February 11, 1935, as a result of an accident while in Seattle, Washington.

• Joseph Carlough, Sr. married Mae Vinberg

• • Joseph Carlough, “Little Joe”, son of Joseph Carlough, Sr. and Mae VINBERG Carlough Bergstrum, was born in Seldovia, Alaska on Nov. 14, 1957. He died Aug. 17, 2000 when his car struck a moose on the Sterling Highway, according to Alaska State Troopers. The moose came through the windshield, killing him. Carlough hit the adult cow moose at about 12:20 a.m. as he was trying to pass another vehicle in Anchor Point, troopers said. He was dead at the scene. Mr. He is survived by his wife Janine; daughters Jessica and Kristi; son Owen Gruber, stepsons Jason and Luke Carlough and Josh and Travis Werba; father and stepmother, Joseph S. and Barbara Carlough Sr.; mother Mae Bergstrum; brothers Scott and Billy Carlough and many other family members.
